New form- slide in - from hero link?

Is there a way I could make a list's new form template to slide in from a link? For example, if user clicks on a square in Hero web part, it should slide in the new form template on the side. And, once its closed, the page should not switch to the List's default view. 

I found this thread, which says its not possible, but its 2 years old so wondering if any new development.

Currently, the link opens on the same tab and I just changed the source in the URL to return to the landing page but it would be nice if the template slides in on the side of the landing page.
