I would advocate Rick DeFoe's idea--wait for the compact header. I feel like mobile/small-screen compatibility is the reason there's so much space there now; while some custom development might fit that space, you'd have to do quite a bit of testing to ensure that filling such a space doesn't impact the mobile/small-screen appearance of that header space.
