Modern Communication site OR Modern Team site for creating a common area site for our company

We want to build a common area site collection, where this site collection will be doing the following:-

1. we will embed a yammer group inside the home page, so users can discuss and chat.

2. we will add some images libraries to share our company's images events and others.

3. a technical area, to create pages about some technical articles, videos, books, etc to share with all users.

4. everyone should be able to contribute to this site collection...

But am not sure if this common area site should be a modern team site or modern communication site. Now I am planning to create it as a modern team site, for those main reasons:-

1. Modern team site will have office 365 group and can be connected with MS teams if needed (unlike communication site which does not provide this capability).

2. The modern team site has additional modern web parts such as planner, jira, etc... which are not available inside communication site.

so now on phase one, achieving the above 4 main requirements can be done by either having a modern team site or modern communication site. but in the future we might need to benefit from having office 365 group and/or the ability to access this common area using MS Teams. so if we chose modern communication site we will not be able to do these... so in other words, i did not find any thing unique in communication sites compared to team sites, while modern team sites have many additional modules and web parts not found on communication sites. so can anyone adivce on this? when would someone prefer communication sites over modern team sites?

Thanks

  • I would say, based on the use scenarios which are orientated towards engagement and collaboration, as opposed to communication, that a modern Team site would fit better with what you are looking to achieve.

    Hope that answers your question

      Hi John John,

Team sites do have advantages as you have noted, but just to note if you want this as the landing page of your SharePoint Site then the new Home Sites, designed to be landing pages - are built upon the Communication Site not Team Site.

      See article

      Hope that helps

ChrisHoardMVP  thanks for the link, to be honest i have not heard of sharepoint home sites before, but they look interesting. in all the cases if we were building the main intranet home site (root site) i would have concerns. but currently the main intranet site is a classic team site which already contain data and have been used for around 1.5 year .. so  the common area site will just be a site collection which have a link from the main home site, but it is not scoped to be the home or root site collection. also seems the concepts in sharepoint online keeps changing, we use to heard about hub sites (which did not scale well, as most people read about them and do not use them),, so now we are having what is called home sites...

so based on the above modern teams or modern communication for our common area site?
