Forward thinking from Microsoft and recommendation is now site collection for everything, you do not want to use sub sites. So everything should be /sites/sitename
You join sites to hubs, but the URL's will not change, it's just logically joining sites together, giving them common theme / search / news rollup / site nav. etc.
