Manual Creation of Modern Team Site?
Not sure what you mean with "manually"...
You can first create a Group, and a modern Team Site will be automatically created, or, conversely, you can create a modern Team Site (in the SharePoint landing page) and a Group will be automatically created.
On the other hand, you can create a classical Team Site (i.e. without a Group) in the SharePoint Admin Center.
At the moment it is not possible to connect a Group to an existing Team Site (i.e. to "groupify a Team Site).
Also, there is no automatic procedure to convert a classical Team Site in a modern one, apart from creating manually a modern Page and declaring it as the homepage.

I think this answered a question I came here to ask..
When I created a new (first) site collection for my tenant (mycompanyname.sharepoint.com) and select the 'Team Site' template option my default sharepoint site appears to be the 'classic' Team Site.
I'd like 'mycompanyname.sharepoint.com' to hit a modern site, so it appears declaring a modern page as the homesite is the only option for now correct?

Yes, you are correct.
Be aware that, as discussed in several other threads, the resulting homepage will not be perfectly identical to the default homepage of "real" modern team sites, but very close anyway.
- Dec 22, 2016Modern Team sites can be created by means of two approaches:
(1) SharePoint Landing page
(2) Creating an Office 365 Group as mentioned by Salvatore
Currently you cannot create modern team sites from the SPO Admin Center - DeletedDec 22, 2016

Yes, it is. You manage the homepage from the Pages tab.
