Limitation on the number of Hub Sites

Just noticed a limitation of 50 hub sites per tenant. As described here : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/sharepoint-online/register-spohubsite?view=sharepoint-ps Is this limitation in place during Targeted Release or a permanent limit. I think 50 might be quite low for a corporate so management will be key. Certainly not an on demand feature. Mark-Kashman is this planned to be an in production limit?

This is now 100 as at (2/10/2018)

    "...

    Important

A maximum of 100 hub sites may be created per tenant, with 'unlimited' number of site collections associated to a hub site.

    ..."

  • Is this only "Registered" Hub sites? Meaning, if a Hub is unregistered, does that free up a spot?

While I agree, 50 does seem low, at this point, we do not have a need for more than a few dozen, and that is over estimating. I may be wrong though.

This limit disappoints me greatly.  I had envisaged "normal" users being able to leverage Hub functionality.  My own team is a "line of service" team and as such we have over 20 different SharePoint sites, and a Hub would have been the perfect solution, but in my organisation of 150,000 people, being allocated a hub from such a small pool is never going to happen :(

Hi Mark, AFAIK this won’t be a permanent limitation. Looping in Mark-Kashman for his insights into this issue.

Hi Jesse, All hub sites are registered. Each hub site is a team or communication site. The Register PowetShell command enables that site to become a hub site. Other sites then associate to that hub site. ‘Unregistered’ hub sites simply revert to being a team or communication site. There is.no unregistered hub site.

Yep I agree 50 is pretty low. But I think for a start Microsoft has begun with that number and will only go up from here in near future. Also each site collection can only join one hub is an other limitation which worries me while planning hub sites for my organization. For ex a site collection need to be part of department hub site and also help hub I need content roll up in both places.
