Wow that's bad. I haven't seen that at all.
Did they have the library synchronised to their local machine using the next gen sync client for OneDrive?
Perhaps you could do that so it is saving "locally" and then pushing it up to SharePoint.

- Strange issue to my knowledge...Office integration in SharePoint works really well and when problems happen is normally due to user errors
