Is there any way to make an office file (accessed by a button) open in the client app by default?

I was able to find a setting that if someone clicks a file from the documents section itself, it opens in the client app by default.

However, I have buttons to shortcut to certain files on my SharePoint homepage, and no matter what I try, I cannot get them to open in the client by default.

Is there a way to do this? Various google searches and searching here didn't provide any fruitful results.
