Information Protection Fields? How do they work?

I was creating a new demo environment for Records Management in SharePoint. As part of this I decided to enable Azure Information Protection to show classification. In doing so all of my SharePoint Document libraries got five new fields: Protection Action, Protection Tag, Protection Tag Modified, ID of the User who set the Protection Tag and Record. I thought oh thats cool, even though I know right now I can still only really do the old school IRM/RMS stuff. Anyway because I saw it I thought I would work with it a bit and cant determine really what is happening. I classify a document in Word and save it and these new fields dont get set. Maybe its a feature on the way and I just stumbled on it.
