implement Document ID service and best practices

Can anyone tell me with confidence if I can enable the document ID service in an existing SP 2010 environment and not have any adverse impact? It won't change all the "modified dates" of documents or anything? We need document ID's for some new libraries and I think the doc ID service sounds like it is what we need.

  • I set up a test environment and confirmed there were no adverse side affects.  I now have document ID's enabled in our production environment and using the Metadata in word documents.  In case anyone else is interested in enabling Document ID's, I followed these instructions:
