I cannot change my sharepoint online URL

I want to change my sharepoint online site URL from one domain name to another. Sharepoint site are always made with the domain attached with .onmicrosoft.com. I have added my custom domain and made it as a defualt domain but my sharepoint site are still using earlier domain which is attached with onmicrosoft.com.

How can I change or make new team site with custom domain and not with the domain attached with onmicrosoft.com.

Thanks for the help in advance!!

  • Hi Jay,

SharePoint Online URL can't be redefined to correspond to a custom domain.

SPO hostname always remains "https://[tenant-name].sharepoint.com", there is no way to change it.

Yet, ".onmicrosoft.com", you mentioned, is not a part of the SPO hostname, but a part of login and can be changed, so a user login would be "[username]@[domain.com]" (the same as in the Active Directory). The AD accounts should be syncing or ADFS is used to achieve it.

Also, as some sort of a workaround, you can host a simple page on a custom domain site to redirect to "https://[tenant-name].sharepoint.com", it can be easier for users to remember the endpoint to the portal.

  • Sorry, but this is not possible today in SPO...you have always to live with the default O365 domain
