How to disconnect MS-Teams team from their respective SharePoint site
jenniferWoo ,
Basically, my presumption was that if you created a Team from a classic SharePoint-only site (aka, one not already associated with any Team)...
...and then created a Team that you attached to it, deleting the Team shouldn't affect that pre-existing site. I will test to confirm that, though.

when you create a Teams channel you have the option to create a new one or from an existing group. I tested this yesterday: I created from a 365 group (which was automatically created when the SharePoint site was created), then I deleted the Teams channel. The 365 group and the SharePoint site were deleted as well.
So the SharePoint site and its associated M365 group existed before the Team? Or before the Channel?
As I said I created the Team from the 365 group which was created when the Site was created...

I have found no way to remove the Teams site from the SharePoint site even though the SharePoint site came first. It makes me nervous because if the Teams site gets deleted the SharePoint site will as well. I think they are linked through the Microsoft 365 group which is deleted when the Teams site is deleted. Some of our SharePoint sites are used intermittently for seasonal activities, so one could get deleted, and the owner might not realize it until it is too late to restore it 😞
I tested hiding the Teams site and it did not hide the SharePoint site. In our case the company is threatening a governance which would delete inactive Teams sites so hiding was not a solution.

Did you ever find a resolution to this? I just found myself in the same situation. I created a new Team, but accidentally created it using an existing Team as a template. Now the new Team is linked to the SharePoint site (which previously did not have a Team associated with it). I tried to delete the Team but of course it deleted the SharePoint site, too. Thankfully I was able to restore the site, but I can't find a way to just delete the Team. Sounds like that's not an option. Ugh. Now everyone sees a Team that shouldn't exist.
If I make it private will that hide it? And will doing so change the permission on the SharePoint site?

jenniferWoo , thanks, the screenshot clarifies it!
Ok. I thought you might have been https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/connect-a-classic-experience-sharepoint-team-site-to-a-new-microsoft-365-group-469c6ee0-2139-4496-9914-7e39d07ac49d.
I'd be surprised if a "classic" site connected to a team would be affected by the Team deletion, but I haven't tested.
