How can I keep metadata when moving files to Office 365 SharePoint?

I am looking to migrate some documents from a SharePoint 2010 on-premises site and from an onsite Windows file server into Office 365 SharePoint sites. My understanding is that simply moving documents over will result in meta data such as file modifired date and document author will be overwritten by the new date/user who is copying the files. Is this right?

I understand there are a lot of tools that can help with this. We're a relatively small non-profit on a limited budget. Are there any options that are either free, or reasonbly priced?

Thanks!

PowerShell is your friend, check these two posts:

    • Definitively Sharegate could be an option if they have somethig special for NGOs...there are othe cheaper tools you might look at such as Lepide migrator
  • ShareGate is fairly priced - let them know your non-proft status while asking for quote.

This tool is also very simple and easy to use.
