Of course they are, but depending on the wide of the change it can be more or less difficult...does the customer completely replace Office 365 search for this custom search or is just only for one site?

And if you are using modern it could be more difficult to remove the default search box.. But you could add a custom webpart which searches a different system

I was thinking of a work around of using a custom search result page that pick up the search term from a query string and then make the web service call, but modifying search result page is currently not working in SharePoint Online. Hi Michael,
have not heard that they will change that one soon the only thing you could do is use classic search where you are able to at different scopes..
