Get-PNPFolderItem doesn't show checked out state?

If I run remove-pnpfolder I receive an error that a file is checked out for editing. 

If I run get-pnpfolderitem, the checkedoutbyuser property is blank and the CheckOutType value is "Online"

So why is there confusion between the two cmdlets?
