AFAIK, Microsoft has not provided a replacement to the classic Follow feature you have described and I have not heard about plans to provide such replacement soon
- Thank you so it seems as of now with native SharePoint Online features we cannot follow people anymore just web sites and documents. It seems then we would have to focus on Yammer to be able in following people going forward.
