File protocol links in SharePoint online
I have an issue tracking list where project managers can request an estimator to review their project costs. We want to be able to provide a link to the project folder which is on our shared network drive (a functionality that has been available in SharePoint 2013, 2016, etc). We have been using links beginning with file//:servername...I can't get it to work, and see as of 2020 that this is not supported in SharePoint online. Can someone explain WHY it's not supported any longer? And are there any options to get it to work?

i think it is a security issue that not "bad" files on a file server can be opened via the browser.

Best way is, that you migrate your data to m365....
