extern users (shared a folder with in sharepoint) don't receive validation code in e-mail

I try to share a folder in Sharepoint with external users with e.g. a gmail-address. The wrote me they don't receive a verification code in their e-mail of spam-folders. Can someone help me out? That would be great, because it actually would be a great way to offer some collective workspace.
