Error while opening file from SharePoint Online
When I open a file from SharePoint Online, I sometimes see the following error (screenshot attached):
"UPLOAD FAILED – Your file wasn’t uploaded because your changes can’t be merged with changes made by someone else."
I’d like to know what is causing this issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi rajesh05,
Yes, we’ve encountered this issue as well, particularly when using the OneDrive client for syncing files. It typically occurs in the following scenarios:
- Offline or Unsynced Changes
Changes are made while offline or before the file has fully synced. When the system reconnects, it detects a mismatch between local and server versions. - Using Desktop Apps vs. Web Apps
Conflicts can arise when some users are editing the file in the desktop application while others are working in the web version, leading to versioning or merge issues.
For frequently accessed files that require co-authoring, please follow these best practices to avoid sync and versioning issues:
- Use the web version of Office apps for real-time collaboration.
- Ensure OneDrive sync is functioning properly before making changes.
- Keep your Office apps updated to the latest version.
- Avoid making edits while offline, as this can lead to upload conflicts.
While this approach isn't entirely foolproof—since user behavior can't be fully controlled—it does offer significant benefits for teams that collaborate frequently on shared files.
