Documents connected to list

I have a list to keep track of customers issues.

Each item needs to have several documents and I need to keep track of versions of the documents so I don´t think attachments are an option since as I understand attachemnts are not handeled as documents in a library.

How should I do this?

At the moment I have a hyperlink to a folder in a document library for each customer.
