Disable permissions in SharePoint online

Hi all,

our Company is doing a pilot with SharePoint Online and I got a question.

Is it possible to disable some permissions for Website Collection?

I know it is possible in SharePoint 2016: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607719(v=office.16).aspx

But is it also available for SharePoint online?

Thx

Dominik

  • Basically the answer is "No", you cannot disable permissions at the Web Application level in SPO since you don't have access to that scope in SPO. You can only configure per site collection basis the security to be applied and the same at the site level

      Thanks for your reply!

We don't want a public website. I just want to prevent that Site Owners can grant some permissions.

You want the Site Owners to not grant permissions? That is what a site owner does, so maybe rethink what a site owner is. Each company has different requirements, but O365 and SharePoint Online are not going to have the same kind of controls you are used to having on premise at the web app level.

A site collection administrator is going to have this permission regardless. Someone in the owner's group/full control will also have this permission. But if you go into a site collection and create a copy of the full control level, take out what permission you give them, then assign the group that custom permission level, it is possible. That is a lot of manual work, but possible.
