Detail pane - audit trail is not accurate after renaming a file

After renaming a file in Sharepoint Online, the details pane changes all references into the new filename instead of only doing so on and after the rename action. This produces an inaccurate audit trail in the details pane. Is this by design or could it be improved?

It would be add value if the previous history for the file could flag it as a renamed file? Or just keep the old filename until on and after the rename.
