Consolidation of two Sharepoint servers

Looking to see if anyone has done this?  (Web/App server)  I realize it's not a recommended scenario but this is a licensing/compliance issue.. Would like to migrate all services to one server, they're currently split over two, plus a SQL backend.

I suppose the 3 servers (WFE/APP/SQL) belongs to the same SharePoint farm.

You can "merge" WFE and APP.

Keep SQL aside if you want to avoid performances issue and more headaches during the merging process

Consolidating Two SharePoint Servers: Key Steps & Best Practices

Merging two SharePoint servers requires careful planning to ensure data integrity, minimal downtime, and seamless user experience.

    Steps for Consolidation:

    1. Assess & Plan:
      • Identify the SharePoint versions and compatibility.
      • Evaluate data, permissions, and site structures.
    2. Backup Data:
      • Create a full backup of both SharePoint environments.
    3. Choose a Migration Method:
      • Database Attach Method: If both servers use the same SharePoint version.
      • Third-Party Tools: Ideal for complex migrations with minimal downtime.
      • Manual Content Migration: Useful for smaller datasets.
    4. Merge & Test:
      • Restore databases on the target server.
      • Configure permissions, workflows, and customizations.
      • Test functionality before going live.
    5. Finalize & Optimize:
      • Redirect users and update URLs.
      • Optimize performance and clean up unused data.

  • First?! Why SharePoint 2010 and why consolidate? You'll only be able to consoldiate SharePoint and the SQL will remain seperate. Worst case sceanrio, turn on all the features on the App server, serve the web pages and then turn off the WFE.
