Cobalt error

I have a user that is appling Metadata to files in a Library on SharePoint Online. Some of the files accept the Metadata just fine but a few are throwing the following " A Colbalt Error was thrown" and those files can't be saved with the Metadata.

A Google search referenced that this was an old name for a sync issue.

Anyone else ever seen this and if so any solution?

  • Hi Guy,

Cobalt was Microsoft's first attempt at incremental data saves in SharePoint 2010 that was further enhanced and built upon in SP 2013 and became Shredded Storage. The files that are having the issues, are they all Excel spreadsheets? That's usually where I have seen the problem. And usually it's because the document or one of it's incremental saves has been corrupted. I have seen the problem occur in other file types, but most common seems to be Excel documents.

David, Thanx. The files we are dealing with are actually Outlook messages. We added a couple of new columns of Metadata to the Library. 95% of the files in the Library will accept the new Metadata and those that won't are throwing the "Cobalt error"

These files are not generally accessed on a regular basis.

      • The only way to know what's happening is just to open a support ticket...in SPO we cannot see what's doing SQL Server behind the scenes when SharePoint data is being stored in the Content DBs
