Change main HUB site URL
Hey people,
I have been building a new intranet in SharePoint Online. It is build using a HUB that contains several site collections and has a heavy use of the HUB navigation.
All that is fine, but I am now in a situation where I need to change the URL of the main HUB site and as it turns out that is simply not possible.
All others site collections can be changed, but for some reason the main HUB cannot be changed.
In my test enviroment I did however manage to change it anyway by disassociating the main HUB from the HUB itself. Needles to say this "removes" the entire HUB and all of the other site collections in the HUB are no longer associated with it obviously, but it also allowed for a change of the URL since the site in question is not longer a main HUB site.
Afterward I went in and associated the site with the HUB again and it seems SharePoint remembered this HUB, since I could chose to associate my site to a HUB that essentially no longer existed. But this being a test I did just that and lo and behold, the HUB was recreated and all of the site collections that was in it before was automatically associated again and everything seems to be working fine.
Now...that is all fine and well to test on a HUB where there is no risk involved. Another thing is to do this on an Intranet ready to go live.
So the questions is...even though this is possible, MS has put this restriction in there for a reason but why? There is an easy work around, but what is the consequence of doing this?
Has anyone else tried this work around? And what are your thoughts on this?
miclarsen1 I had the same issue. I removed the hub association from all of the sites connected to the Hub, then change Hub to a non-Hub site, changed the URL and then made it a Hub again and reconnected sites.
I no adverse affects but I think it would be worth checking web-parts using the using the 'Sites associated with Hub' scope after making the change. Content rollup is search based, so it may take a little time for content rollup to return results.
