Can't Edit Blog Subsite on SharePoint Communications Site

I created a SharePoint Communications site (SharePoint 2016/Online), and then a subsite underneath it using the Blog site template, but I am unable to edit the blog page itself (I can edit individual posts, but not the landing page for the blog). 

 

I need to be able to edit the blog hompage to insert a web part and add custom code to shorten the preview text of the blog (so that it doesn't show the entire post and look horrible, aesthetically). 

 

Anyone have any ideas? Is editing blog template subsites ONLY a feature that's available on SharePoint Teams subsites?

    TiffanyMarchi Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue?

    I have the same issue with the Project Site Template when residing under a Communications site.
