Cannot change the site logo thumbnail

Hi Lucas.
Thanks for your info. This is so annoying and somewhat intermittent. It's happening again on new sites today.
I have managed to get the logo thumbnail to stick today by going to Site assets, deleting the existing "__siteIcon__.jpg " and then quickly uploading a new logo with the same file name and extension in Change the look > Header > Change site logo thumbnail.
Bit of a phaff but it's sticking so far! Pngs are working for the site logo.
Best wishes, Vicki
I struggled with this for a while. Changing the site logo thumbnail for communication sites worked fine, but I could not change it for team sites. I tried:
- different image file types
- different image sizes
- replacing the image files in Site Assets
- setting the -HiddenFromExchangeClientsEnabled to true/false
but none of these worked. I made the observation, however that for team sites with Teams activated, if I made myself an owner and updated the group logo in Teams it would update in the associated SharePoint team site as well. I assumed it had something to do with the Teams interface that made the difference, and so I was puzzled on how to do this for team sites that did not have Teams activated. However, the key was that I was making myself a group owner. The site logo thumbnail appears to be associated with the group in a way that the site logo is not. Thus, while you can update the site logo of a team site as site admin, you must be a group owner in order to update the site logo thumbnail. As soon as I made myself a group owner, I was able to update the site logo thumbnail from the SharePoint settings.
