I feel your pain, and exactly for this task I use Text Webpart, not Markdown one - text allows sharepoint page to have proper item version history with changes per text. To automate the process of adding breadcrumbs and even TOC I use "SharePoint Wiki from markdown" chrome extension - very helpful MD > SP generation path with all the links covered around.
