Best practice for moving documents between sites/sitecollections

What is the best/most user friendly way to move files/folders from one site to another?

Explorer view seems not to work with larger files.

  • The best and most user friendly way is to use paid third party tools (such as ShareGate), which usually move also metadata and previous versions.

Free solutions, which don't move metadata and previous versions, include:

    1. Explorer view (one-step)
    2. Drag&Drop between locally synced folders (one-step)
    3. Web UI (D&D or menus - in two steps)
    4. SPFileZilla (in two steps)

Is this for a migration activity or for general user best practices/ease of use?

What size file did you have trouble with Explorer view?

Free solutions, which don't move neither metadata nor previous versions, include:
    1. Local move between synced folders (which is a one-step solution)
    2. Explorer view (also one-step)
    3. Download and re-upload (in two steps) by means of the Web UI (menus or drag&drop - browser dependent)
