Advice regarding use of /teams and /sites for Team and Communication sites respectively.

I'm looking for any thoughts on best practice for an intranet type experience using Communication Sites and Team Sites side by side for the same set of teams.

One of the problems I have is that I'd like to be able to have Team sites under /teams and Communication Sites (and others) under /sites.  The current experience doesn't seem to allow that. When I create a new site, it defaults to the location set under SharePoint admin.

I was thinking that organisationally, we could have /teams/finance for private team sites and /sites/finance for communication sites and all other site types.

Does that make sense, or am I just doing it wrong?

Thanks, D.

Not sure if this is what you are after, but have you seen the newly announced hub sites, with this, you can aggregate communication sites as well as team sites?

Admittedly this won't be available until next year, so maybe someone else has some practical tips, with what you might do today.
