Not in SharePoint Online. It would be a custom iFilter that you can only implement in on premise SharePoint Search like you used to do with PDF files prior to SharePoint 2013.
I'm sure there is a reason Microsoft didn't want to parse template files, but I don't know what that is.

thanks for getting back to me , is there a way to add the file extension at all , i cant seem to find anything or anywhere to add the extensions

We got around it differently based on our needs. These template files were being returned on a templates available page in a Content Search Web Part for our HR group. Instead of relying on Content Search, we just used manual text entry to point to specific templates. We could have also used a Document Library Web Part and used a view/filter.

yeah i was able to view and display them in the web part , was just when users were using the search option it would return that result , and you'd have thought the world was ending with some of them ...
but if its by design then , thats just how it is lol
it's all a bit new to them anyway as i have only just implemented SharePoint across the company, i no doubt will have some more gotcha's as we progress...
