Negative slack

Good afternoon

I have a fairly extensive project where a lot of tasks are showing negative slack - up to 300 days!

Some are constrained, but i've interrogated it fairly extensively and I can't find the root cause. There are even tasks without successors that are showing as critical.

Is there an easy way to trouble shoot this? Really all I want it to be able to show my critical path through to project finish, but these constrained tasks distort that by making tasks that affect the finish date of a constrained task critical, as opposed to those that affect the finish date.

Is there a way to attach a file to this thread?

Thanks in advance

There are only two causes for negative Total Slack:

    1. A successor task has an inflexible constraint, such as Finish No Later Than, and the Finish date of that task has slipped past the FNLT date. This will generate negative Total Slack on that task and on EVERY immediate predecessor task as well.

    2. A successor task has a Deadline date and the task's Finish date has slipped past its Deadline date. This will generate negative Total Slack on that task and on EVERY immediate predecessor task as well.

You will need to examine your project for inflexible constraints and Deadline dates, and this will show you the cause of your situation. Hope this helps.

      Hi Dale

I understand that but when tasks are put in without any predecessors that are automatically assigned a start no earlier than constraint. These tasks then show as critical when really they are not.

      Hope I'm making sense.

Very odd. Could you share a screenshot so we can see what you are seeing? That would help us to troubleshoot and resolve your problem.
