Rolling out: Guest access support for tasks in Planner
Seems MSFT started rolling out Guest access for planner. I can able to assign tasks for guests. Exciting!

Hi Dave, I cannot able to access this plan in Planner. I have received your email for access to the Group and can able to get to SharePoint for the Group. Have you added the task assignment in this plan to myself?
The current mechanism seems like " Can able to assign tasks to external users as they are supported in O365 Groups. The external user will get email notification for all updates and can participate via groups. Also external user can post an update to the task by just replying to the email and it will be available in the comments section in the task card"

AFAIK, there is no ETA defined yet for Guess Access support in Planner...something unbelievable if you ask my opinion
