The partner program team is aware of this and is working on changes that will be announced in the near future which should address this potential issue.

While your notion is correct, it's missing additional changes to the renewal process of Benefits. As with this change, the renewal window for Benefits was also adjusted to 30-days prior to Membership end date. I guess, specifically to avoid scenario's like you described ;)
Thus you can (and should) renew your Benefits prior to the Membership end date.
