Outlook for macOS not finding all contacts

I'm using Office 365 for macOS and I use Outlook (v16.77.1) connected to my Google account.  When I create a new Email, it can find some of my contacts when I search for them but not all, and those it cannot find, I can go to the Contacts view and see them there.  So my Google Contacts data is syncing correctly; it's just that Outlook apparently can't find all of it when trying to address a new Email.

Interestingly, I can just type the Email address in the To: field and send the message, then when I open the sent message, I can click on the address and it pulls up that person's info from Outlook contacts.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

  • Outlook for macOS may not show all contacts in the "To:" field due to an issue with its search indexing, even if the contacts are visible in the Contacts tab. Since your Google Contacts are syncing correctly, try rebuilding the search index:

Go to Outlook > Preferences > Search, then click Rebuild. After that, restart Outlook. This should refresh the contact search and allow all synced contacts to appear when composing emails.

Are you describing functionality in Outlook for Windows, give the version for macOS doesn't have a "Preferences" option (it's "Settings") and in the Search section, there's no rebuild option (see below)?

I have the exact same problem, except it's not a gmail account I have linked to Outlook but an MS Exchange account. Did you happen to find a solution in the meantime?

It's been a while but to the best of my recollection, the problem was with "new" Outlook.  I ran into some other issues with editing and got tired of it, so have been in "legacy" for some time.
