Outlook.com Sync email - Unable to load these settings. Please try again later.
I finally got past the "Unable to load these settings. Please try again later" message, only to have all of the connected accounts disappear from web portal the next day!
I discovered this when I realized emails weren't downloading unless I had outlook desktop open (otherwise, nothing downloaded on mobile app or outlook.live). I have the same pop accounts added to desktop as well, so I assumed this had to do with Exchange and the connected pop accounts, suspecting all the grandfathered connections I had were now a generation past.
I depend on the mobile app too much, so I as a temporary solution I decided to suspend pop send/receive in outlook desktop and forward my pop accounts to my outlook exchange address. For a bit, that seemed to resolve things, and I was getting email even with outlook desktop closed.
But NEXT day I started getting duplicate (even triplicate) emails. That's when I realized (maybe?) the pop accounts were still connected with Exchange (perhaps?). I've spent days trying to sort everything out (I have upwards of two dozen email accounts to juggle). I tried everything I could and some things I couldn't (or shouldn't), I'd do-undo-redo, repeat, drink, repeat.
I've used outlook for over a quarter century (started as a toddler), but yeah, need to move on (tried once before, but, yeah... ).
Anyone have a similar outlook occurrence?

Mine too disappeared right after I cleaned out the unnecessary connected accounts and saved the rest. The connected accounts section has been removed from the panel, including for another account of mine without any connected accounts that didn't encounter the 'Unable to load these settings' error.
It seems microsoft couldn't find a complete solution to the problem and resorted to this. I suppose it's a classic microsoft approach

If the account did not have any connected accounts at the end of May 2021, the feature was removed then. Only accounts with connected accounts on that date could continue to use them - but removing the only connected account would immediately remove the option - even if you planned on removing it and immediately adding it back.

What you're saying does not correspond to my other account, which has never had connected accounts before. While I was encountering the 'Unable to load these settings' error on my main account, I checked multiple times on my other account, and the 'Manage connected accounts' section was usable. It remained that way until the end of last month when the error went away.

sjrily I'm having this same issue. The Sync tab started to work but I noticed that I was not getting email for one of my 5 connected accounts. I decided to try deleting and adding back that one account. As soon as I deleted that one connected account, all of my connected accounts went away and the option to add a connected account is gone. Now I have no connected accounts!!!

The part about the option disappearing when all of the accounts are removed is how its always worked since they killed the feature. When the last account is removed, the option is gone.
But... in the past, as long as one account existed, you had the feature. Deleting 1 = delete all is new and unexpected.
One of my accounts triggers the "need to update" email - I'm not sure I want to update it. 😞- sjrilyFeb 02, 2024Copper ContributorI wouldn't update anything at this point. I was updating a Gmail account with an app password when mine disappeared.
But, we have Microsoft 365 family, and supposedly, connected accounts for this plan has not been removed. Microsoft answers/tech/help site never mention that, but Microsoft plan features does. That makes WAY more sense - what use would a non-business user have for an email client that only facilitates a single outlook address? I'm guessing bigger businesses are using network exchange setups beyond outlook on the web.
Be nice to have some clarification on that. Are connected accounts for non-business plans a current feature, a thing of the past, perpetually or temporarily grandfathered? As it is, seems touch anything and you'll never see any of them again.
- sjrilyFeb 01, 2024Copper ContributorYup, that's about what happened, I think I was trying to update (again) a disconnected Gmail account (a few days earlier I set up a app password for it - I wasn't getting the option to sign in w/Google, and was successfull in updating).
After all my connected accounts disappeared, I thought end of life for connected accounts just HAPPENED to kick in (or I broke the web page). I didn't think the no-more-connected accounts applied to family 365 (or why an email platform would restrict that in the first place), but there are so many tangled versions of that and that and here and there, who the ...heck knows).
After accounts disappeared I noticed an add Gmail account button (thought that was new, sort of supported end of life therory). Figuring I had no more connected accounts anyway, tried to add said account that way. I WAS given the option of sign in w/Google at that point. But honestly I can't remember the final outcome, and don't recall a pop/IMAP choice, and have no idea if it's there. It IS still configured as pop in desktop.
In my case, seems like desktop is running things instead of cloud, in a way, kind of...
Do you have desktop and or mobile too? How are they behaving?- KTLutzFeb 01, 2024Copper ContributorDesktop and mobile are working find. Outlook.com is the problem.
- Jan 31, 2024Not I... but at least 2 users said their accounts disappeared when they got back in. Their situation sounds to be a bit different from yours though.
One asked for support to remove an account to get rid of the annoying email and they apparently removed all (not surprising to me), the other one updated passwords and deleted one account. As soon as he deleted the account, they all disappeared.- KTLutzFeb 01, 2024Copper ContributorAll my connected accounts are also gone and I can't find a way to add them back to Outlook.
- sjrilyFeb 01, 2024Copper ContributorYou mean Outlook web or Outlook desktop?
- bullmoonJan 31, 2024Copper Contributor
Yes, I didn't delete anything - I just updated the password for the offending Comcast email account. Once I did, it claimed to sync.

That may be how my nightmare started - trying to reconnect a gmail account then poof!

The "Sync" page Finally worked for me today. Wow!
