Outlook 365 suddenly won't open
Hello; Outlook worked this morning, now it won't open, says to open in Safe Mode, but that doesn't work, tries to open for 5 seconds than nothing. Restarted PC and no help. Please advise! Steven F 603
Steven F, original poster here: my Outlook just fixed @ 1:20 Pm pst, I tried it and it opened right up. Hope the same for all of you, maybe 1 at a time! Thanks all.......

We are having the same issue reported from multiple users. ~School District in California
Did your computer recently install updates? If so, which ones?
- Steven_F_603Copper Contributor
It auto=updates, so I don't know.... if others have same problem, then its Microsoft issue on their end?
- Joshua BowersCopper Contributor
It certainly seems to be related to an update or possibly an issue on MSFTSteven_F_603
Can you look at your Windows update history to see if any were installed today?
Go to your settings > Updates > View Update history. It should tell you if there are any that were installed today.

Rolls back to previous version
- EdgarecayceCopper ContributorThis worked for me. Reddit FTW!

DanFriendly I have had luck with some clients by starting Outlook in Safe Mode, by either adding /safe to the shortcut or holding down the control key while clicking it.
Reporting 3 impacted clients starting this AM, two of which with multiple affected machines. Starts to load then disappears without a message.

Ok so tried downgrading my O365 Current Channel v2006 Build 13001.20384 to Build 13001.20266 (the build working fine on my other laptop which has not installed the July patches yet!).
Outcome: Outlook still crashing....
Meanwhile installed the July patches on my laptop (Windows 10 v2004 Build 19041.329), rebooted, started Outlook and works like a charm.
Now downloading the O365 Current Channel update to 13001.20384... see if I can break it.
- krzysztof_woloszynCopper ContributorI've got the same situation. Today I've update WIN10 with the last ones: KB4565627, KB4565503, KB4557957, KB4561600

Same issue here - I've tried Office repair 3x - rebooted. This occurred after recent Windows update last night.

SOLUTION
See solution here - worked for me - rolled back to previous version - that was easy - only took 3 hrs to fix 🙂

Steven_F_603 I am in the same boat I disabled addins, no luck, I was hoping I could uninstall the latest O365 update, but the control panel app just uninstalled O365 completely, I am going to reinstall and see what happens. All after last night's update.

This fix worked - thank you so much for whoever shared this.
open cmd, run:
cd \Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun
then enter:
officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.6366.2062
Good luck

Frank_Petrus That version would depend on which O365 Update Channel you are on though.
I'm having the issue with Current Channel: Version 2006 (Build 13001.20384).
So I would need to go back to Version 2005 (Build 12827.20336)
The 16.0.6366.2062 listed in that 'fix' is an Office Insider build from 2016... Probably don't want to go all the way back there 🙂

- Justin GallagherCopper ContributorThis Link was shared on the Monthly Security Briefing call. They said it was not a result of patching, but rather something else that happened at the same time. They said it will be fixed without any interaction needed.Just wanted to share!
- Andy D'HollanderBrass Contributor
Justin Gallagher thx for the link!
I'm a bit doubtful on the 'it will fix itself' statement. I'm sure that could be true for unmanaged consumer devices, but for devices that are managed through Intune/ConfigMgr shouldn't fix themselves as that would mean Microsoft is making changes to the client around the managed update process...
Unless the issue is related to the O365 tenant, but in my case I have 2 devices in my home lab within the same tenant, both installed the July patches and 1 has the issue, the other doesn't.- Justin GallagherCopper Contributor
They mentioned it on the July Security Briefing call, but they would not give many details except for it was not related to the July Patches. They made it sound like it was at a higher level than the endpoints. So I was thinking tenant or azure level. I know we have been fighting with issues in excel and ATP settings that show the same behavior, but its a different issue.

Steven_F_603i did this which 2 people said worked and it was instant. i didn't have to remove the windows update.

I've had the same problem ever since I ran the latest Microsoft update this evening. Outlook opens for a few seconds then closes so I can't access my emails! Very frustrating!
