New Outlook Bug - Hitting backspace when the spellcheck popup opens deletes whole email

This is a highly disruptive bug.

When I am typing, I, like everyone, make typos. Usually you just click on the wrong character to set the cursor there, hit backspace, and fix the type.

The brilliance of the new outlook is now that if you click on a word with a typo in it, it directly opens the spellcheck popup. But if I now click backspace, instead of the cursor deleting the previous character. The backspace is handled by the list of emails in the inbox, instead of the text i am writing. This results in the email i am typing, as well as the email i was replying to is deleted. And if I hit backspace a couple of times, it deletes more email in the inbox.

So to summarize.

- Replty to email
- Start typing
- Make a typo
- Try to fix the typo by using the mouse to place the cursor next to the typo
(The spellcheck popup takes focus away from the text editor)
- Try to delete the erroneous characters with backspace.
ERROR: The whole email is deleted, and if you are unlucky other emails as well if you pressed backspace repeatedly.

Good luck finding the correct emails back.

I could not reproduce the same error with the Backspace key. However, I typed unavilbe instead of unavailable. The spellchecker opens with suggestions. When I tried to replace a character instead of selecting a suggested word, I typed the letter "E", which archived my message. I tried it with the letter N, and it opened a new message

It appears to be picking up keyboard shortcuts.
Microsoft has confirmed the fix will be rolled out in the first week of August.

Thank you Teresa. Extremely frustrating. Any idea when the fix will be rolled out? It's 8/5 and it just happened again. I looked into the Archived folder and EEK. In seeking to 'help' MS is causing folks to lose and miss important stuff.

jvergeer This has been happening to me for weeks now. Incredibly frustrating. I type my email, make a mistake, click the word to delete it (triggering the spellcheck popup), hit backspace a few times, then panic as emails disappear out of my inbox.

The emails that disappear are going to archive, best I can tell. Its easy to get them back but what I can't get back is the precious few seconds of my life I shave off each time I hit backspace. It terrifies me.

    Hi jvergeer,

the issue is still not resolved, the workaround is to turn of all the Editor (spelling checker) settings in the new Outlook or in the Outlook on the Web.

I needed to do this in Outlook on the web because I could not open the Editor settings in the new Outlook.

To resolve the problem, the following should be done: Open a new email in the new Outlook, go to the Editor settings, and turn off all the Editor features. Then, restart Outlook.

If the Editor settings cannot be accessed in the new Outlook, it should be done in Outlook on the web by adjusting the same settings there.

LeonPavesic Thank you for the workaround to this highly disruptive bug. Still not addressed by Microsoft. My concern is that the workaround turns off ALL editor features.

This is stil happening and it's incredibly frustrating. The worst is when you hit backspace more than once and it starts deleting random emails from your inbox - very hard to then identify which ones have gone - I actually have already missed a couple of very important emails due to this bug
