modern authentication method needed to continue syncing outlook email
I received an email from Microsoft the other day that stated I would need to change to a "modern authentication method" in order to continue using my Outlook email or calendar on my Apple iMac. I read all the literature but I am so confused and cannot figure out how to do this. Can anyone help?

I believe you can press the "-" button to remove the account with outdated authentication, then re-add the account. Once you've reached the step where it asks for your name and email, hit "Next". If you get the popup, then the next screen will be a Microsoft sign-in prompt, and that's good.
If you get asked to fill out a username and password without a Microsoft sign-in prompt (i.e., there's no Microsoft logo in the upper left corner), I'm not sure how to proceed. Make sure you're on macOS 10.14 or later.
iOS 11, iPadOS 13.1, macOS 10.14, visionOS 1.1, or later, support Microsoft modern authentication workflows of Exchange micro tenants. OAuth can be used for Office 365 accounts with Modern Authentication enabled. In iOS 12, iPadOS 13.1, and macOS 10.14, or later, configuration can also be performed manually or with a configuration profile.

dangbrandondang Is all this necessary if I don't use Outlook? I have a hotmail account and a Microsoft 365 subscription. I don't sync anything to Outlook and don't have it. Thanks.

dangbrandondang thank you for your response. My one concern is that when I delete my account with the o”old authentication” and go to add my account back in, will Microsoft let me keep our email address or will I lose that? do you know?

cbolus Happy to help! So, no, you will not lose your email address. The Internet Accounts preferences in macOS are for synchronizing your client (The Apple Mail application) with the server (Outlook.com). Since you are just making changes to the client, your email address, which is configured on the server, will remain usable.
