Log in into outlook with hotmail account

I have my primary account on hotmail.com

Trying to log in via apps. Works. Trying to log in via web it claims password is incorrect or was used too many times and always asks for alternative method.

Did MS phased out passwords?

  • No, passwords haven't been phased out but there are restrictions in place when there have been too many failed password logon attempts for a certain account within a short period of time.

This could indicate a brute-force attack on your account. In those cases, you should indeed use an alternative method to logon like via the Authenticator app. This of course requires you to have configured this beforehand.

The logon via a password method gets enabled automatically again once the attack stops. Unfortunately, you have no indication when this might be and a new attack could start at any give time again.

In short; The Internet has changed and is shifting itself to password-less due to ongoing brute-force attacks.
