Email messages disappearing from Inbox and Sent

For some months, I have noticed emails disappearing from my Inbox and Sent files, after an interval;  first of about 4-5 months and now only 3 weeks.

I have checked all settings I can find. I have no Archive folder and do not know how to use it.

This a serious nuisance.
