Creating an Oulook distribution list, my first, LOST all the addresses in Outlook Contact

Created a list of addresses using instructions from MS.  Add then saved.  Now all I get for both icons People and Groups is 1 address and the group.  I had MANY addresses in the People folder.  What happened.  The group does hold the ones I selected for the group.
