Come on! Terrible New UI decision
I'm not sure who Microsoftoutlook decided to place the number of unread messages right next to the folder name, but they clearly don't use Outlook with multiple email addresses and multiple subfolder...
Use the Favorites feature and only have the folders you want to actively monitor located there. These can be any folder from any account.
I have 6 mailboxes with dozens of folders and this method works for me.
