Since the target is one file, search for that file before rolling back the entire drive. On OneDrive for the web, search by part of the name, check Recent and Shared, then open the Recycle bin. Unlock Personal Vault in the same browser session and check whether the missing file or its parent folder was stored there. If the file still exists, open Version history and restore only the needed version. Before using Restore your OneDrive, download copies of any files created or changed after the proposed restore point. The full-drive operation reverses many actions across OneDrive, so it can undo good changes while recovering the missing one. Keep Personal Vault unlocked, start the restore from OneDrive Settings, and review the activity list for the deletion or move before confirming the date.
If the vault error returns, capture its exact text, UTC time, browser, account type, and any correlation ID, then open a private Microsoft OneDrive support case. Do not reset or delete Personal Vault as a troubleshooting step. A vault access problem and a missing ordinary file can be separate issues, and deleting the protected container can make recovery harder.

Since it’s just one missing file, check OneDrive on the web > Recycle bin first. For a personal account, deleted files normally stay there for 30 days. If the file was in Personal Vault, unlock the vault; you may also need to select Show Personal Vault items in the recycle bin. If the file still exists but its contents changed, use Version history instead.
For a full OneDrive restore:
- Sign in at onedrive.live.com using the account that held the file.
- Open Personal Vault and complete verification to unlock it.
- Go to Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive, then choose a date or custom restore point. This feature requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and covers the previous 30 days.
- Review the activity list before starting. A full restore undoes changes across OneDrive, not just to the missing file, so download separate copies of newer files you want to keep.
If the vault error continues, the exact wording matters—it could concern unlocking the vault or a different account issue. Keep the vault unlocked and retry promptly in the same browser session. If it still fails, copy the error message, with personal details removed, rather than resetting or deleting the vault.
