shared OneDrive .xlsx file does not open on Chromebox
I used to be able to share a OneDrive .xlsx file via e-mail then open the file on Chromebox. Now when I click the file in the e-mail I get "Sorry, an error has occurred" message on the Microsoft OneDrive site on Chrome browser (on Chromebox). Has something changed in the last year where shared OneDrive files can no longer be accessed on Chromebox? I am signed into OneDrive on Chrome browser on Chromebox but still get same error message. Thanks.

There have been some updates and changes to OneDrive and Office Online services over the past year that might be causing this issue. The problem you're experiencing with accessing a shared OneDrive .xlsx file on a Chromebox via the Chrome browser could be related to several factors, including browser compatibility, OneDrive service updates, or specific settings on your Chromebox.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:
1. Check Browser Compatibility and Updates
- Update Chrome: Ensure that your Chrome browser on the Chromebox is up to date. An outdated browser can cause compatibility issues with modern web applications.
- Open Chrome, click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner, go to Help, and then About Google Chrome. This will check for updates and install them if available.
2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
- Sometimes, clearing the cache and cookies can resolve issues related to web applications.
- Open Chrome, click on the three-dot menu, go to More tools, then Clear browsing data. Select All time for the time range, and make sure Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files are selected, then click Clear data.
3. Try Incognito Mode
- Open the link in an Incognito window to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is related to extensions or cached data.
- Open Chrome, click on the three-dot menu, then New incognito window, and try accessing the shared OneDrive file from there.
4. Check OneDrive Permissions and Link Settings
- Ensure that the sharing permissions of the OneDrive file are set correctly. Sometimes, the link settings might need adjustment.
- Go to OneDrive on a different device or browser where you can access the file.
- Right-click the file, select Share, and check the link settings to ensure it's set to Anyone with the link can view or as needed.
5. Sign Out and Sign In Again
- Sign out of OneDrive in your Chrome browser on the Chromebox and sign back in. This can sometimes refresh your session and resolve access issues.
6. Check for Known Issues
- Sometimes, Microsoft or Google might have service issues or updates causing temporary problems. Check for any known issues on the Microsoft 365 Service Status page or Google Workspace Status Dashboard.
7. Try a Different Browser
- If possible, try accessing the shared OneDrive file using a different browser like Firefox to see if the issue is specific to Chrome on your Chromebox.
Summary
The issue you are encountering could be due to browser updates, cached data, permission settings, or temporary service disruptions. By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the problem. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
