Personal vault isn't working. Won't open.
My OneDrive cloud icon has a red X and says my personal vault isn't up to date. I've tried upgrading, installing a newer version, removing and reinstalling, cursing banging my head on my desk... Some...

Force it to ask for your PIN again
- Right-click the OneDrive icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner)
- Click Settings (gear icon) → Account tab
- Click "Unlink this PC" (don't worry, your files stay in the cloud)
- Restart your computer
- Open OneDrive again, sign back in, and then try opening the Personal Vault
- This forces Windows to re-authenticate the Vault
If that doesn't work, delete the Vault cache
- Close OneDrive completely (right-click icon → Close OneDrive)
- Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings
- Delete any file that has "PersonalVault" in the name
- Restart OneDrive and try opening the Vault again
Nuclear option that actually works most of the time
- Move everything out of your Personal Vault to a regular OneDrive folder (temporarily)
- Right-click the empty Vault folder → Lock Personal Vault
- Wait 5 minutes
- Open it again (it should work now)
- Move your files back in small batches (not all at once)
The real question:
When you click on the Personal Vault folder in File Explorer right now, what exactly happens?
- Does it do nothing?
- Does it give an error message?
- Does it ask for your PIN but then freeze?
Hope this helps!
