Onedrive downloaded zip file unable to open on Windows PC
Your files are still safe in OneDrive for Business, so don't worry—you haven't lost anything. A 20 GB ZIP file is very large, and downloads of that size can sometimes become corrupted or incomplete. Here's how to get your files onto your PC reliably:
1. Try a different ZIP tool
Windows' built-in ZIP extractor can have trouble with very large archives. Install the free 7-Zip, then right-click the ZIP file and choose 7-Zip → Test archive.
- If the test passes: Extract the archive with 7-Zip to a short path, such as C:\MyFiles.
- If the test reports errors (such as CRC errors or "Unexpected end of archive"): the ZIP is likely damaged or incomplete. Continue to the next step.
2. Download again in smaller batches
If the ZIP is damaged, download your files again from the OneDrive website, but download several smaller groups of folders instead of one large ZIP. Keeping each download to a few gigabytes is generally much more reliable than creating a single 20 GB archive.
3. The most reliable solution: use the OneDrive sync client
For an 80 GB OneDrive for Business library, the recommended approach is to sync your files directly to your PC instead of downloading a ZIP archive. The sync client downloads the original files, resumes interrupted transfers automatically, and avoids problems caused by creating one huge archive.
- Sign in to the OneDrive sync app with your work or school account.
- Open Settings → Account → Choose folders and select the folders you want.
- In File Explorer, right-click the OneDrive folder (or specific folders) and choose Always keep on this device.
Once the download finishes, you'll have a complete local copy of your files. You can then copy them to another location if you no longer want to sync them.
I hope you’re able now to recover your files.
