OneDrive Android stuck on "We need to update your account"
Hi, Since a few days ago, I can no longer use OneDrive on my Xiaomi phone.
When I open the app, I get the following message: "We can't display this item. We need to update your account. This operation should only take a few moments."
When I select OK, nothing happens.
No sign-in window appears and I can't access any of my files.
I've already tried:
- uninstalling and reinstalling OneDrive
- clearing the app cache and data
- restarting the phone
- checking my network connection
The problem remains. What's strange is that OneDrive seems to remember my account because it opens directly on the "My files" screen instead of asking me to sign in again.
Has anyone else seen this recently on Android? Thanks.

Hi,
Let’s fix this methodically without deleting anything important right away.
Here is the safe, step-by-step plan:
1. Test your account (Do not change anything yet)
Open Chrome on your phone and go to:
- account.microsoft.com (sign in)
- onedrive.live.com (check if your files appear)
If this works, your account is healthy, and we focus purely on the Android app.
2. Update the authentication pieces
Go to the Play Store and update these three apps:
- OneDrive
- Google Chrome
- Android System WebView
After updating, restart your phone.
3. Force-reset the OneDrive app
Open OneDrive. If the error still appears, do this:
- Go to Settings → Apps → OneDrive → Force stop.
- Then go to Storage → Clear cache AND Clear data.
- Open OneDrive again and try to sign in.
ls after step 3:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Manage accounts on your Xiaomi.
- See if your Microsoft account is listed there.
- Do not remove it yet. Just tell me what is shown, and we will decide the next move from there.
Important warning: Please do not remove your account from the Microsoft Authenticator app unless you have a backup 2FA method (like SMS) ready. We only touch that as an absolute last resort.
I can't guarantee it will work for 100% of cases without knowing the results of your Phase 0 test (whether your account works in Chrome).
This sequence gives you the highest chance of fixing it without risking your account security.
Give it a try 🙂.
