Missing data
The most likely explanation is that Clipchamp was saving its video exports to your 5 GB personal OneDrive. When an account goes that far over its storage limit, Microsoft eventually starts removing files to bring it back within quota—after several warning emails and a grace period. That would explain why the data is no longer there. It's also possible that the storage warning was a temporary glitch or that the files were moved elsewhere, but the numbers you shared strongly point to an automated cleanup.
Here’s what you can do right now to try to get your files back:
1. Check your personal OneDrive Recycle Bin
Go to onedrive.live.com, sign in with your personal Microsoft account, and click Recycle bin on the left. If you see your files there, select them and choose Restore.
2. Look for a second-stage recycle bin
Inside the Recycle Bin, there may be a link or button labelled Second-stage recycle bin – check there as well.
3. Use the “Restore your OneDrive” feature
On the OneDrive website, click the gear icon (top right) → Options → Restore your OneDrive. Choose a date just before the first warning email you received. This can roll back your entire OneDrive to that point, potentially bringing everything back.
4. Check if the files ended up in your business OneDrive (the 5 TB one)
Sign in to your business account and search for folders named “Clipchamp” or any video exports. It’s a long shot, but worth verifying.
5. Reach out to Microsoft Support again with specific questions
Since you already have a ticket, ask them:
- “Did Microsoft’s over-quota cleanup process delete my files? If so, can they be recovered from your backups?”
- “Can you confirm if the 290 GB figure was real or just a storage calculation error?”
- “If the files were deleted, is there any way to restore them?”
If the data was removed by Microsoft’s automated process more than a few days ago, recovery may unfortunately not be possible. But the steps above give you the best chance right now, especially the restore feature.
To prevent this in the future, make sure Clipchamp is set to save exports directly to your business OneDrive or to a local folder on your PC.
I hope you’re able to recover your files.
