Introducing OneDrive Files On-Demand and other features making it easy to access files
We're always looking at how we can imporve the SharePoint Online environment to provide expereicnes that meet with how customers want to use the service. This appleis to how we thing about both limits and boundaries. We will have more to annoucne about how we are enabling managing larger lists from a view perspective, and this applies to views in document libraries, too. The 5k limit has been met with limiting outcomes, especially if you've approached it from a metadata management perspective - which can help if you've not tried this - and found that it is not enough to help performance or return views of lists as you wish.
For today, I'll direct you to turn on metadata-based navigation, and configure the most important columns as either key filters or hierarchies. That has the effect of making it really easy to create selective queries over large lists, and has built in fallback behavior for times when the user accidently selects too large a data set. The basics for setting that up can be found here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-server-help/configure-metadata-navigation-for-a-list-or-library-HA101820113.aspx . We, too, have extensive documentation on designing large lists here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262813.aspx. You should start with that and apply the recommendations to the customers scenario - that even with large view limits/threshold will help end users more easily navigate and find what they are looking for.
And soon, you'll hear more from us on how we're addressing this.
Thanks,
Mark
Will Files On-Demand be available on Windows 7?
